Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says Australia continues to oppose the construction of artificial reefs and the militarisation in the South China Sea during her visit to India.
Ms Bishop made the comments during her tour of the subcontinent for talks with her Indian counterpart and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The foreign minister said Australia urged all countries to respect international law in settling their differences.
‘This is how countries in our region need to resolve disputes, including in the South China Sea,’ she said.
Ms Bishop also indicated she is confident Australia and India will be able to negotiate a free trade agreement.
