MANILA – Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Thursday thanked the United States following a report that it would give a Philippine military unit a command and control facility to help in monitoring the West Philippine Sea.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command (Wescom) in Palawan will “soon” receive the facility from the US, according to a report. Wescom has jurisdiction over the West Philippine Sea, the country’s exclusive economic zone in the disputed South China Sea.
“Finally action instead of more talk. Thank you America,” Locsin said in a tweet.

The US, which is locked in a trade dispute with China, regularly criticizes Chinese militarization of the South China Sea, asserting freedom of navigation.
President Rodrigo Duterte previously dared the US to fire the “first shot” against Beijing in the disputed South China Sea.
