MANILA – Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday said she would initiate moves in the Senate to either ratify or repudiate the supposed verbal fishing agreement between President Rodrigo Duterte and China’s president Xi Jingping.
Hontiveros described as “rock solid,” Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio’s call for the Senate to look into the fishing deal.
“If the President concedes our exclusive fishing rights in the exclusive economic zone to China kami sa Senado we must step up,” Hontiveros told ANC.
Senate must ‘act now’ on Duterte-Xi fishing deal, says Carpio
The agreement allowing China to fish requires a treaty or international agreement which Carpio said requires concurrence of the Senate.
Carpio added that the Constitution reserves the exploitation of marine resources within the exclusive economic zone or EEZ to Filipinos.
