Japan’s Defense Minister says she hopes European countries will get involved in the issue of the South China Sea. China is increasing its maritime activity in the region.

Tomomi Inada spoke on Friday at the French Military Academy Institute for Strategic Research in Paris. It’s a think tank for the French Defense Ministry.

Inada said armed conflicts could occur if countries pursue their interests with force, and don’t rely on international law.

She noted French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told her the issue of the South China Sea directly affects Europe.

Le Drian also told her he would propose European navies demonstrate a presence in the waters.
