Japan protests Chinese gas field development in sea

The Japanese government has lodged a protest over China’s gas field development in the East China Sea after confirming the presence of flares suggesting gas production is under way at two more facilities, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Wednesday.
The flares, Suga said, were confirmed in mid-September and add to those already observed at five of the 16 facilities built by China near the median line between the countries’ coasts, which Tokyo regards as the demarcation line of their respective economic waters. Japan fears that the facilities, though located on the Chinese side of the line, would tap gas fields straddling the line.
