The Ministry of Foreign Affairs weighed in on this week’s landmark ruling by an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague, which ruled in favour of fellow ASEAN member state the Philippines in a suit it brought against China over contentious claims in the South China Sea.
The ministry said yesterday it was “now studying the impact” of the ruling and urged “all parties to exercise restraint with regard to activities that could increase tension and refrain from threats or use of force”.
The tribunal’s July 12 decision – rejecting China’s controversial maritime claims as having no legal basis – was a major blow for Beijing’s territorial ambitions in the South China Sea, a major shipping route over which it claims domain almost entirely.
